General Chat / How can I best recruit writers for my site?
« on: February 09, 2011, 08:24:16 AM »
I'm wanting to broaden the information on my blog to include areas of technology that I don't have enough information on to write proper articles about like Mac OS, gaming consoles, and non-iOS mobile devices. What would be the best way to find extra writers that would be willing to contribute articles on a somewhat regular basis for free without being a nuisance?

Just an update, I've done a little bit of searching and found some services that let you embed forums on your site using external resources.

Tangler -> http://www.tangler.com
Nabble -> http://www.nabble.com
Webride -> http://webride.org/tools/website/

Personally, I would probably go with Tangler from what I've seen of it. It looks to be the nicest interface. They're also all free services.

SMTP is only supported with the paid plan. If you want to stick with the free plan, anything that uses SMTP would have to be external. Either that, or create an account manually for every member of the forums and they wouldn't be able to receive emails from the forums.

@morris8cars: You could use an external service for a contact form. I use a Google Docs form for mine. It embeds nicely into my page and it can be set to alert you either immediately or in a daily digest when somebody submits something.

glenn_admin: Thanks, I've been working with different colors on my test server to see what went well. I'll probably be updating the theme once I get it figured out.

mansrm81: The background image is actually only 2px x 497px  vertical gradient, repeated horizontally and blending into the page background color. It should be a fixed background, not repeating or moving when you scroll. If this happened to you, what browser are you using? It's something I would have to fix.

Thanks, that seems to have done the trick.

That's why I love XtreemHost so much, the support is fast and accurate. It's greatly appreciated.

Community Support / Database connection error when publishing a new post
« on: January 27, 2011, 10:50:32 AM »
I know there are several other threads about database connection errors, but I didn't see any that pertained to my situation. Whenever I publish a new post on my Wordpress site at http://digitalhead.co.cc, it comes up with an error message, but the post appears to publish fine. I've checked the username, password, and server in the wp-config.php file and they are all correct. I guess if they weren't the posts wouldn't go. This started happening after the maintenance was finished.

I've attached a screenshot of the error message, but none of it seems to be correct since the posts still worked. I guess it's just a minor annoyance to be presented with this error when I publish something, but is there a way to fix it?

Thanks.

Community Support / Multiple domains - 1 site
« on: December 22, 2010, 12:21:26 PM »
I currently have a .co.cc domain and looking to get a .com domain. Is it possible to have both with a Wordpress site to maintain RSS feeds, bookmarks, external links, and bit.ly links? I know on a my test server, it doesn't like me changing from "localhost" to the computer's name, or to the computer's IP for the address.

Would this mean that I would have to set my .co.cc domain as a redirect in order to maintain my .com? If so, would links to a post using the .co.cc still go to the proper page on my .com?

Thanks for the information. I forgot to check to see if Cron was enabled.

Figured it's about time I posted my website here. It's my tech blog that has been neglected, but should be revamped soon.

Not really much there right now, but over the past couple months, I've gathered article ideas and hope to get a steady stream of articles posted. Article and site suggestions are welcome.

Community Support / Wordpress scheduled posts not working
« on: December 08, 2010, 05:40:55 AM »
A couple days ago, I started setting up several scheduled posts on my Wordpress based blog. This morning was supposed to be the start of these posts, but when I checked my blog, it wasn't there and the admin dashboard said "Post schedule missed" and I had to publish it manually. Is this a problem on all Wordpress blogs, a cron issue, or would it be a bug in my code?

Any suggestions on fixing this? I'm hoping to use scheduled posts to help keep myself on the ball and have new posts on a routine schedule.

Nevermind. I found the answer in another thread here:

I guess I just needed to dig through a couple more pages.

I was having the same problem and came across this thread. I installed the plugin mentioned, activated it, and tried to upgrade an existing plugin and it came up with this error:
Code: [Select]
Unable to locate WordPress Content directory (wp-content).
Could this be caused by the fact that my Wordpress installation is in a subdirectory (~/digitalhead.co.cc/htdocs/)? If so. can it be fixed without moving the installation to my home directory?

Websites / Re: Movable Type vs. Wordpress
« on: February 05, 2010, 07:31:59 PM »
Any suggestions for a blog platform that's lightweight and has good support for blogging clients under Linux? I was planning on using Blogilo (KDE based blogging client) which, Wordpress and Movable Type are fully supported, and MetaWeblog is almost as supported lacking only a couple features that I don't plan on using anyway. Any thoughts one LifeType? It uses the Movable Type API, but looks like it would be a little lighter.
